Tragic Collapse in Pakistans Mardan Marble Mine Claims Nine Lives

Islamabad, April 9: A recent collapse at a marble mine in the Mardan area of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has resulted in the deaths of nine workers. This incident highlights systemic negligence within the mining industry.

The mining sector in Pakistan is among the most unsafe, hazardous, and neglected fields. A report indicates that a lack of safety regulations and inadequate procedures often lead to workers becoming trapped in mines or dying in incidents such as collapses and explosions.

An editorial in the prominent daily newspaper, The Express Tribune, stated, “The Mardan region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has witnessed another tragic incident, with the collapse of a marble mine claiming the lives of nine workers. In the mining industry, despite modern technology and safety protocols, it is challenging to completely avoid accidents. However, insufficient funding for safety technologies and the failure to properly enforce existing laws significantly increase the likelihood of mining accidents in Pakistan.”

The mining sector should be protected under two laws aimed at enhancing mine safety, inspections, and regulations. Yet, despite the implementation of these laws, there appears to be no significant impact.

The Express Tribune noted that miners from impoverished backgrounds often work without training, support, or fair wages. Pakistani authorities need to provide workers with proper training, quality equipment, access to emergency services, and knowledge of safety standards.

In December, a landslide in a coal mine resulted in the deaths of two workers in the outskirts of Quetta. According to Balochistan’s chief mine inspector, Rafiuallah, the workers were inside the mine when a large amount of earth collapsed, burying them. This information was reported by the Pakistani daily, Dawn.

Dawn also reported that in October, four coal miners lost their lives in two separate incidents in the Duki and Chamlang areas of Balochistan. Police stated that the deceased were residents of Afghanistan and were working in the mines of Duki and Chamlang. The accidents were attributed to the presence of methane gas.
