Hanoi, July 11: A tragic incident occurred near Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam, on Saturday when a boat carrying Indian tourists capsized. According to local media reports, 15 individuals lost their lives, while 21 others were rescued and taken to various hospitals for treatment.
The cause of the accident remains unknown. Local authorities are conducting rescue operations. The Indian Embassy in Vietnam has stated that they are gathering detailed information regarding the incident.
The Indian Embassy in Hanoi shared on the social media platform X, “A tragic event occurred a few hours ago when a boat carrying several Indian tourists capsized near Phu Quoc Island. Local authorities are continuing search and rescue operations, and precise details of the incident are being collected.”
To assist the affected families and provide information, the Indian Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City has established a control room. Additionally, a separate control room has been set up in Hanoi.
According to local news website VNExpress, the speedboat involved in the accident had 32 Indian tourists, one tour guide, and four crew members on board.
Reports indicate that the accident occurred around 1 PM when the Ocean Pearl Island Company’s speedboat experienced a sudden technical failure and capsized.
Nearby tourist boats quickly arrived at the scene for rescue efforts. According to the N Thoi Port Border Guard Station, the tragic incident resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals, including two women and 13 men. The 21 rescued individuals were sent to various hospitals for emergency medical treatment.
For the rescue operation, the Border Guard Station deployed two vessels along with 35 officers and soldiers. The Navy and Coast Guard are also assisting in the relief and rescue efforts.
Phu Quoc is known for its coral reef diving, particularly around the nearby Me Rut Ngoai Island. Tourists typically travel by speedboat or boat for 20 to 40 minutes to reach this destination.
