Mumbai, February 22: A tragic incident occurred outside RD Gardi Medical College in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, where MBBS student Harshit Mehra was fatally struck by a speeding truck on Saturday.
According to police reports, the accident took place as Harshit was traveling from his hostel to college. The collision happened near the college gate in the Chimanganj police jurisdiction.
Harshit was riding his motorcycle when a fast-moving truck hit him. The impact was so severe that he died on the spot.
In response to the incident, fellow students and college staff staged a protest by blocking the road and placing Harshit’s body on the street. They expressed concerns that the lack of speed breakers near the college gate and non-compliance with traffic regulations contributed to the tragedy.
Upon receiving reports of the roadblock, officers from the Chimanganj police station, along with City SP Pushpa Prajapati, arrived at the scene to engage with the students. After assuring them that traffic safety measures and speed control mechanisms would be implemented around the college, the protest was called off.
Police later reported that the truck driver initially fled the scene but was apprehended and arrested shortly after. Legal proceedings related to the incident are ongoing.
The college administration revealed that Harshit was the only son in his family, with his father having passed away previously. Fellow students remembered him as an active participant in cultural and extracurricular activities, well-known for his passion for music.
Dr. Ruchi Mishra from the physiotherapy department stated, “There is a wave of grief throughout the college following Harshit’s death.”
