Patna, September 1: Sanjeev Mukhiya has received significant relief from a special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Patna regarding the high-profile NEET-UG question paper leak case of 2024. The court has ordered his release from judicial custody in this matter. However, he will remain in jail due to another case registered by the Economic Offenses Unit.
During the hearing on Monday evening, Mukhiya appeared before the court via video conferencing. The court reviewed the status of the investigation and the actions taken against him so far. Following this, the court ordered his release from judicial custody, contingent upon the submission of necessary bail bonds.
Sanjeev Mukhiya has been in judicial custody at Beur Jail since May 2025. His name emerged during the investigation into the NEET-UG question paper leak, prompting agencies to examine his involvement. The Economic Offenses Unit had interrogated him for several days under remand. Given the seriousness of the case, the central government later assigned the investigation to the CBI. An FIR was registered at the Shastri Nagar police station in Patna in 2024 regarding the NEET-UG question paper leak.
After an initial investigation by the Bihar Police and the Economic Offenses Unit, the CBI took over the case on June 23, 2024. Following this, the agency also interrogated Mukhiya, probing his possible role in the alleged network that leaked the question paper and disseminated it to candidates. Following the interrogation and remand, it was believed that further legal action could be taken against him concerning his involvement in the case.
However, during the investigation, no substantial evidence linking Mukhiya directly to the question paper leak surfaced. Consequently, the prosecution against him did not progress. Considering the current status of the case, the special court granted him relief from judicial custody. The CBI has taken action against several accused individuals in the NEET-UG question paper leak case, filing charges against 45 defendants in the special court. The investigation has scrutinized the entire chain from the leak of the question paper to its alleged distribution to candidates.
The NEET-UG 2024 exam has sparked nationwide controversy due to allegations of question paper leaks and irregularities in the exam results. The initial investigation in Bihar was conducted by the Economic Offenses Unit, which was later handed over to the CBI by the central government. With the recent court order, Sanjeev Mukhiya has gained relief from judicial custody in the NEET-UG question paper leak case.
