New Delhi, March 30: The ongoing conflict in the Middle East was a focal point in the Rajya Sabha on Monday. Discussing the severe implications of the Iran-Israel war, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut labeled it a critical global and environmental issue.
He noted that this war has persisted for over a month, with repercussions that extend beyond the region. The conflict has triggered multiple crises worldwide. Raut emphasized that the war is exacerbating shortages of essential commodities like fuel and LPG. More alarmingly, he pointed out the environmental and health threats that could gradually reach India.
Raut stated that the black clouds emerging from the war-torn areas in Iran are as dangerous as bombs. He remarked that while missiles and bombs may not be falling on India, the toxic clouds hovering over Iran could pose significant risks to the country. He highlighted that airstrikes around Tehran have ignited severe fires in oil refineries and gas storage facilities, releasing large amounts of toxic smoke into the atmosphere.
The smoke contains sulfur, nitrogen oxides, and other harmful chemicals that are extremely detrimental to health. Raut mentioned that people in Iran are experiencing breathing difficulties. He also raised concerns about the phenomenon of “black rain” in parts of Iran, which is laden with toxic elements.
Citing warnings from the World Health Organization, he stressed that this situation could be life-threatening for human health. Experts have expressed fears that this pollution will not be confined to national borders. In the future, it could impact western Indian states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Punjab. This could lead to deteriorating air quality and an increased risk of acid rain, resulting in crop damage, soil contamination, and a rise in respiratory diseases and serious health issues like cancer.
Raut has called for immediate government action on this matter. He proposed the formation of a team of environmental experts to scientifically assess the potential impacts on India. He urged for enhanced air quality monitoring, especially in western states, and the establishment of an alert system. Furthermore, he advocated for India to raise its voice against this environmental crisis on international platforms to expedite the end of the conflict.
In his address to the Rajya Sabha, Raut asserted that the ongoing war in the Middle East has evolved into a global environmental and health crisis. He warned, โThese black clouds are a threat not just to Tehran, but to all of humanity. If action is not taken now, it may be too late in the future.โ He concluded that the effects of war extend beyond national borders, impacting the environment, health, and economies across the globe.
