New Delhi, April 23: In the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, the Congress party is contesting independently. However, Congress MP Tariq Anwar has made a statement that contradicts the party’s strategy. He claims that the current atmosphere in West Bengal is entirely in favor of Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Speaking about the first phase of voting for 152 Assembly seats scheduled for Thursday, Anwar noted that the public is highly engaged in this election, with a significant number of women participating. He anticipates that voter turnout could reach 80% by evening, although he acknowledged the unpredictability of secret ballots. According to him, the prevailing sentiment appears to favor Mamata Banerjee.
Regarding the notice received by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge from the Election Commission, Anwar stated that the party would respond appropriately. Kharge had clarified that his previous comments were misinterpreted, emphasizing that the central government’s use of agencies like the ED and CBI is intended to intimidate the opposition.
Congress MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh expressed confidence that the BJP would suffer a significant defeat in Bengal, while Congress is expected to perform better than before. He remarked that public anger towards the current government exists, but the presence of the BJP may still benefit the incumbent administration.
On the floor test for the new government in Bihar, Singh described it as merely a formality, asserting that as long as the JD(U) aligns with the BJP, Samrat Chaudhary will emerge victorious.
Congress leader Ajay Kumar Lallu extended his congratulations to the people of Tamil Nadu and Bengal for having the opportunity to vote, asserting that Congress is the true alternative to the BJP. He criticized the BJP’s oppressive policies that undermine the rights of the youth, farmers, and marginalized communities, and stated that the public will respond to the confusion surrounding women’s reservation.
