New Delhi, August 30: Tim Cook’s tenure as CEO of Apple concludes on August 31, with John Ternus set to take over. Cook will continue to serve as the Executive Chairman of the Board.
Cook’s leadership has been largely successful since he took the reins in August 2011, following Steve Jobs’ declining health.
Under Cook’s 15-year leadership, Apple’s market capitalization skyrocketed from $350 billion to over $4 trillion.
During this period, the company’s stock price surged from $13 to nearly $320, reflecting a remarkable increase of about 25 times.
One of Cook’s significant achievements has been transforming Apple into a business that extends beyond hardware. Services like the App Store, Apple Music, and Apple Pay have driven rapid growth.
The services segment now generates over $100 billion annually, offering higher margins compared to Apple’s hardware business.
Cook also made a pivotal shift in Apple’s chip strategy. The company reduced its reliance on Intel and began designing its processors for Mac computers under the Apple Silicon platform.
This transition has given Apple greater control over performance, product development, and its extensive hardware-software ecosystem.
New product categories emerged during his tenure. In 2015, Apple launched the Apple Watch, focusing on health, fitness, and everyday connectivity.
A year later, the introduction of AirPods made wireless earbuds a mainstream consumer category, creating another significant revenue stream for Apple.
However, Cook’s journey was not without challenges. Apple Maps, launched in 2012, faced severe criticism for providing inaccurate and incomplete information in its early days.
Recently, the Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, launched in 2023, struggled with widespread adoption due to its high price, which became a major barrier for consumers.
Ultimately, Apple also halted its ambitious electric and autonomous vehicle program, known as ‘Project Titan’, due to years of development, high costs, and uncertainty regarding commercial success.
Perhaps the most pressing question for Apple’s next phase revolves around artificial intelligence (AI). While Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI have rapidly integrated AI into consumer and enterprise products, Apple has taken a more cautious approach, emphasizing privacy, software integration, and on-device computing.
This strategy could pose a significant test for Cook’s successor, John Ternus. Apple has made strides in incorporating AI capabilities into its ecosystem, but the pressure to keep pace with competitors is mounting.
Cook’s journey at Apple has been marked by extraordinary financial growth, successful new businesses, and products, alongside efforts that did not meet expectations. Nevertheless, his contributions to Apple’s expansion and transformation are undeniable.
