Augusta, April 7: Tiger Woods dominated discussions at the Masters this week, despite not being present at Augusta National. His absence, due to a DUI arrest, has drawn criticism from fellow golfer Jason Day.
Authorities in Florida reported that Woods was impaired on March 27 when his Land Rover collided with a trailer, flipping onto its side on a residential street. During the incident, police discovered two painkiller pills in his pocket. Woods was arrested after refusing to take a urine test and spent a brief time in jail.
Day commented on the situation, stating, “He’s just a human being like everyone else and we have struggles. It’s unfortunate. The only thing that I don’t understand is that it’s a little bit selfish of him to drive and put other people in harm’s way.”
He added, “When you’re the player that he was and how strong-willed he is, he thinks he can do almost anything. That’s probably why he’s driving and a little bit under the influence.”
This marks the second consecutive year Woods has missed the Masters, albeit for different reasons. Last year, he was unable to attend due to a ruptured Achilles tendon.
Woods entered a not guilty plea last week and has since been granted permission to seek treatment abroad.
Day, who once reached No. 1 in the world, expressed his admiration for Woods, saying, “He was my hero — he’s my hero. The reason why I play golf is because of this tournament and Tiger. It’s hard to see him go through what he’s going through, especially under the microscope.”
He continued, “Some people want him to fail. Some people obviously want him to succeed. It’s really difficult for me to watch him, and I know that he’s getting the help now, which is good. I’m just hoping he comes out on the other side and is better.”
Woods is a five-time Masters champion, with his last victory in 2019 marking a remarkable comeback in golf. Over the years, he has faced numerous challenges, including reconstructive knee surgery and multiple back surgeries. His last major incident was in 2017 when he was found asleep behind the wheel of his car due to a mix of painkillers.
In 2021, Woods suffered severe injuries to his right leg and ankle after a high-speed crash in Los Angeles. He underwent surgery on his Achilles tendon and had a seventh back surgery last year.
Nick Faldo criticized Woods in a recent interview, emphasizing the need for accountability. “There are two sides to this right now. There’s one side that’s like … let’s care for Tiger. And then there has got to be a responsibility and an accountability side as well,” he stated.
Phil Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion, is also absent this year due to a family health issue. This is the first time since 1994 that neither Woods nor Mickelson will be at Augusta National for the Masters.
Woods has made significant contributions to the Masters, not only through his historic achievements but also by working on local golf initiatives, including a short course renovation and the opening of a TGR Learning Lab in Augusta.
Harris English reflected on Woods’ impact, saying, “He’s such a legend in this game, somebody I looked up to. Watching him win around this place in ’97 is kind of the reason I started getting into golf. I know he’s going to get through this. He has a big fight ahead of him. He’s a fighter. That’s what he does.”
