New Delhi, September 2: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has appointed Meharajuddin Vadu as the head coach of India’s U-17 men’s national football team. The team is currently preparing for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2027 qualifiers.
Former international player Meharajuddin Vadu has taken charge of the U-17 team’s training camp, which commenced in Margao, Goa, on Wednesday. The initial phase of the camp will focus on trials as the coaching staff aims to identify and prepare a strong team for the continental qualifiers.
After assuming responsibility for the U-17 team, Vadu expressed, “It is a great honor to lead India’s U-17 men’s national team. This is a crucial age group, and our immediate focus is to create an environment where they can improve and compete at the highest level. We have started the camp with trials and will prepare thoroughly for the qualifiers. I am excited to work with the players and ensure a successful camp.”
India has been placed in ‘Group E’ for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2027 qualifiers, where they will face Malaysia, Palestine, Singapore, and Guam in the group stage. These qualifiers are scheduled to take place from November 11 to 20 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Vadu, an AFC Pro License holder, recently served as the head coach of Mohun Bagan Sporting Club and has also been in charge of Real Kashmir FC and Sudeva Delhi FC.
At 42 years old, Vadu has had a successful international career with India, representing the national team in several major tournaments. He was part of the Indian squad that won the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008 and later played in the AFC Asian Cup in 2011.
He was also a member of the Indian team that won the SAFF Championship in 2005 and played in teams that clinched the Nehru Cup in 2007 and 2009. At the club level, he was part of Chennaiyin FC, which won the Indian Super League title in 2015.
