Three Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in Coimbatore Gang Rape Case

Coimbatore, March 7: A court has sentenced three individuals to life imprisonment for their involvement in the gang rape of a 20-year-old college student near Coimbatore International Airport in November 2025.

The verdict was delivered by a women’s court, which found the accused guilty under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The offenders have been identified as T. Karuppasamy, also known as Satish (30), his brother T. Kaliswaran, known as Karthik (21), and their distant relative M. Guna, referred to as Thavasi (20). The court imposed life sentences under Section 70(1) of the IPC, which mandates a minimum of 20 years of rigorous imprisonment, extendable for the remainder of the convict’s life, alongside potential fines.

In addition to the primary charges, the court also convicted the trio under seven other sections of the IPC related to assault, criminal intimidation, and other associated offenses.

The accused were presented in court around 1:30 PM on Saturday, where the judge pronounced them guilty and handed down the sentences. According to the prosecution, the incident occurred between the night of November 2 and the early hours of November 3, 2025.

The survivor, a 20-year-old college student, was sitting in a car with her 25-year-old boyfriend on a dirt road connecting Vrindavan Nagar and SIHS Colony near Coimbatore International Airport. The charge sheet states that the three accused approached the couple, assaulted the boyfriend, and forcibly dragged the woman to a secluded area where they gang-raped her before fleeing the scene. Following the incident, the victim’s boyfriend filed a complaint at the Peelamedu police station, leading to the swift arrest of the accused.

The case sparked significant outrage in the area, prompting strong demands for swift justice. The investigation was led by Inspector S. Latha, with assistance from Inspector R. Arjun Kumar, the station house officer at Peelamedu police station. Public prosecutor B. Jisha, representing the state, confirmed that the court also directed the Tamil Nadu government to provide compensation to the victims.

The survivor will receive ₹7 lakh as compensation, while her boyfriend, who was also attacked and reported the incident, will be awarded ₹2 lakh.
