Kolkata, June 25: In a significant development in the murder case of Tamanna Khatun, a minor girl who was killed during political violence last year in Nadia district, West Bengal police have arrested three additional suspects. This brings the total number of arrests in the case to 16.
According to West Bengal police, the three fugitives—Ismail Sheikh, Hafizul Sheikh, and Minarul Sheikh—were apprehended in Gurugram, Haryana, between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Authorities stated that these individuals had fled to the area to evade capture following the initiation of the murder investigation.
The arrested suspects are being transported to Kolkata under transit remand and will subsequently be presented in a Nadia district court, where the prosecution will seek their police custody.
Earlier, on Tuesday night, police arrested two other absconding suspects, Sabit Sheikh and Ziarul Sheikh, leading to a total of five arrests within a 24-hour period.
It is noteworthy that Tamanna Khatun lost her life following violence that erupted after the declaration of results for the Kaliganj assembly by-election on June 23, 2025. During this election, Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed secured a significant victory.
Allegations suggest that during the victory procession, some Trinamool Congress supporters hurled crude bombs at Tamanna’s residence, resulting in her immediate death. Tamanna’s family is believed to be supporters of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)].
Tamanna’s mother, Sabina Iyasmeen Sheikh, recently contested the Kaliganj seat as a CPI(M) candidate in the West Bengal assembly elections but was defeated by Trinamool Congress’s Alifa Ahmed, who was elected for a second consecutive term.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday evening, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari met with Tamanna’s mother and assured her of justice. This prompted a swift police response, leading to the arrest of five suspects within just 24 hours.
