NBC News and The New York Times reported that Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the department received a call about the shooting at around 2:15 p.m. Officers rushed to the scene and found three people bleeding in the store’s parking lot. Chief Davis confirmed that the suspect, a 32-year-old man, was taken into custody.

According to police, after the shooting, the suspect stole a car from the parking lot and fled, but soon met with an accident. He then hijacked another vehicle and tried to escape again before being apprehended by pursuing officers. “This is a tragic day for Austin,” Chief Davis said.

Police said one adult and the child found in the parking lot were declared dead at the scene. Another injured adult was taken to the hospital but succumbed to injuries. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released. Officials said he is suffering from mental distress, and the motive behind the shooting is under investigation.

Chief Davis also noted that just three days ago, a 30-year-old man opened fire at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters in Atlanta, killing a police officer before taking his own life. Last month, a gunman in New York shot dead four people inside a Midtown Manhattan office building.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson expressed condolences to the victims’ families on X, saying, “My thoughts are with the victims and their families. This was a heinous and cowardly act of gun violence.”
