Ranchi, August 10: Thousands of students in Ranchi, Jharkhand, continue their protest against alleged irregularities in the JPSC and JSSC recruitment exams, now entering their 18th day. Gathered for a march to the assembly since 9 AM, the students remain resolute even after facing water cannons, tear gas, and baton charges throughout the day.
Despite the challenges, the determined youth show no signs of retreat. The assembly proceedings took place without opposition members present, and the session was adjourned until Tuesday afternoon. However, the crowd on the streets remains steadfast in their demands.
As protesters began dismantling barricades, tensions escalated. The police initially responded with water cannons, but when the fearless students pressed on, they resorted to firing six tear gas canisters and executing a baton charge.
A direct clash occurred behind the Jagannathpur Temple, where students and police engaged in a violent confrontation. Rocks were thrown, and in response, the police used their batons. One student sustained a serious head injury, resulting in significant bleeding, while several others, including police officers, were also injured. An injured officer was promptly transported to the hospital.
Ignoring numerous restrictions, a large group of students advanced to within 200 meters of the new assembly building by 2 PM, navigating through fields and unpaved paths. At this critical juncture, JLKML legislator Jayaram Mahto arrived to speak with the protesters. After discussions, the students agreed to sit down and continue their chants on the road. However, with heavy security presence and ongoing tensions, this major movement appears to be evolving into a new phase.
The crowd of students, now divided into smaller groups, has begun to move toward the MLA hostel. Police and administrative teams are working tirelessly to prevent these groups from advancing. The protesters remain firm in their demands for the cancellation of controversial exams like the JSSC CGL, improvements in the selection process, and a CBI investigation into the entire matter.
