Sunderland, July 15: Belgian football star Thomas Meunier has signed a two-year contract with Premier League club Sunderland AFC ahead of the 2026/27 season. The 34-year-old defender was a free agent after leaving Lille.

Meunier is set to join Sunderland AFC in early August and is eager to represent the club in both domestic and European competitions this season.

In an official statement from the club, Meunier expressed his excitement and honor in joining Sunderland. “I am thrilled and honored to be joining Sunderland. I am happy to come here and start this new chapter in my career. The Premier League is one of the most competitive and exciting leagues in the world. It is a challenge I wanted to experience. When I spoke with the club, I was impressed by their ambitious goals, projects, and desire to progress,” he stated.

He added, “Playing in Europe was also a significant factor in my decision, as a player, you always want to test yourself against the best teams and compete for trophies. I hope to share my experience with the team both on and off the field. I have been fortunate to play for some fantastic teams in my career. Now, I am eager to give my all for this club, support my teammates, and build a strong relationship with the fans.”

Recently, Thomas Meunier represented Belgium in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He has played over 550 senior club matches and 83 international games.
