Beijing, June 7: Chinese electric tricycles are gaining immense popularity worldwide. American consumers have chosen these tricycles as Christmas gifts, while traders from Chile have traveled to Jiangsu province to place bulk orders for electric cargo vehicles. The warning sound of “Please be cautious when reversing” from these tricycles has echoed across the globe. How are Chinese products thriving in international markets?
Many foreigners, unfamiliar with China’s manufacturing industry, attribute the popularity of Chinese products to their low prices. However, the story of Chinese electric tricycles challenges this perception. In China, these tricycles are priced between 2,000 to 5,000 yuan, yet they can sell for 3,000 to 6,000 dollars in Europe and America. Despite the price increase of two to eight times, supply still struggles to meet demand, thanks to China’s robust industrial capacity.
The largest production base for electric tricycles in China is located in Feng County, Shuchao City, Jiangsu province, which holds over 90% of the country’s parts market. Additionally, Wuxi City in Jiangsu province hosts six of China’s top ten electric vehicle companies and over 600 supporting enterprises within a 50 square kilometer area. This has led to the establishment of an “electric vehicle industrial cluster” that is self-sufficient and controllable from core parts to complete vehicle assembly—something not easily found in any other country.
Moreover, the complete industrial chain is complemented by significant technological advancements in China’s manufacturing sector. This is a key reason behind the international appeal of Chinese products. Competition among Chinese companies has shifted from price-based to technology-driven. They design new products according to the diverse demands of consumers and continuously adapt to global market needs.
In recent years, global oil prices have remained high. Various countries have introduced carbon reduction policies and electrification goals. Consequently, the demand for low-cost green transportation solutions has surged in the world market. Chinese companies were already prepared for this shift. While some foreign brands focus on the high-end market, Chinese firms primarily cater to the daily transportation needs of the general public, farmers’ field transport, and family leisure travel. This focus is a significant source of competitiveness for Chinese products.
