New Delhi, March 6: The Chaitra Navratri festival begins on March 19, and preparations are underway at various Shakti Peeth and Siddh Peeth temples for the worship of the nine forms of Goddess Durga.
Across the country, numerous miraculous temples dedicated to Maa Bhagwati draw devotees to seek blessings. However, have you ever heard of a temple that warns of impending death? In Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, such a temple exists, known for its prophetic abilities.
Nestled in the Kusmahi forest, the Budhiya Mai Temple is located just 12 kilometers from Gorakhpur district. Despite its remote location, the temple attracts a large number of devotees during Navratri. It is believed that this Siddh Peeth has the power to avert untimely death, a claim supported by local folklore.
According to local legends, there once stood a bridge near the temple over a large drain. One day, a wedding procession halted there. A woman dressed in a white sari warned them not to cross the bridge, but the guests ignored her advice. Tragically, as they reached the center of the bridge, it collapsed, resulting in the death of all attendees.
After the incident, the mysterious woman vanished, leaving no trace. However, tribal people living in the forest claim to have seen her, though she would disappear in an instant. Today, the Budhiya Mai Temple stands near the site of that ill-fated bridge.
The temple is over 600 years old and has garnered the attention of local ministers and even the Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, who has visited multiple times. Special rituals take place during Navratri, and devotees often undertake a trek through the forest to fulfill their wishes. To reach the temple, they must cross a large river, for which boat arrangements are made. Visitors can take auto-rickshaws or jeeps from Mohaddipur Chowk to reach Kusmahi forest, passing by the airport along the way.
