Spectacular Celebration of Rang Panchami at Mahakaleshwar Temple

Ujjain, March 8: A magnificent scene unfolded at the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain as devotees celebrated Rang Panchami, a festival observed five days after Holi. From early morning, a flood of devotees gathered outside the temple, filling the air with chants of ‘Har-Har Mahadev.’ After offering saffron water and gulal to Baba, many devotees joined in the festivities, playing Holi with their beloved deity.

The celebration began with the traditional Bhasma Aarti, during which saffron water was offered, marking the start of Rang Panchami. Later in the evening, a traditional Gher procession will take place in the city. The temple doors were opened at 4 AM after receiving permission from Veerabhadra, followed by worship of all deities in the sanctum and the offering of herbal gulal to commence the festivities. This was followed by the regular Bhasma Aarti and adornment of Baba.

On this special day, Baba was adorned with a moon, bel leaves, and the sun, using bhang and dried fruits for decoration. In an exclusive interview, Mahesh Sharma, a priest at the Mahakaleshwar Temple, shared, “This is an ancient tradition, and it is still followed at the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. Festivals like Holi, Rang Panchami, and Gudi Padwa are celebrated as part of our customs. Devotees come to play Holi with Baba.”

He further explained, “During today’s Bhasma Aarti, we celebrated Rang Panchami with colors made from special flowers, and saffron water was also offered to Baba. In the evening, the Gher procession will take place, where devotees carry saffron flags and shower colors on each other. This procession has been held since the time of Vikramaditya; it symbolizes victory and valor. Gher processions are not only celebrated in Madhya Pradesh but also in various parts of the country.”
