Mumbai, 9 January – South superstar Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated film ‘Jan Nayakan’ has been in the limelight for months. This film is considered his last major cinematic venture before he fully immerses himself in Tamil Nadu’s political arena.
The film was scheduled to release on 9 January but was postponed due to the absence of a censor certificate. Despite advance bookings and high demand for tickets, the release was stalled. Now, the Madras High Court has delivered a significant ruling in the matter.
TrendingThe court ruled that the Chairperson’s decision to refer the film to the revising committee was unlawful. According to the judgment, once the Chairperson indicated that the UA certificate would be issued after cuts, their authority ceased automatically. The court has directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to immediately grant the UA certificate for ‘Jan Nayakan’.
The certification controversy escalated when a CBFC member lodged a complaint against the Chairperson, alleging that objections were overlooked before recommending the UA certificate. Following this, the CBFC referred the film to the revising committee, causing repeated delays in the release. Consequently, the producers approached the Madras High Court for intervention.
The filmmakers argued before the court that the film had not been released or screened to any third party so far. They contended that withholding the certificate based on the complaint was arbitrary and unfair. The producers requested the court to order the immediate issuance of the certificate to avoid further delay.
The film was submitted to the CBFC’s Chennai office, where the screening committee viewed it and suggested minor cuts related to sexual violence, violence, and certain dialogues. The producers complied with these cuts and resubmitted the film. However, due to the complaint, the film was sent to the revising committee. With the court’s directive now in place, the path for the film’s release is clear.
Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, ‘Jan Nayakan’ stars Thalapathy Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde and Mamitha Baiju in key roles. The film is set to release in four languages across 22 countries.
