New Delhi, March 25: The Karnataka High Court is set to hear actor Ranveer Singh’s petition regarding the Kantara mimicry controversy on April 10. The petition seeks to dismiss a complaint and FIR related to allegedly derogatory remarks made about a divine character in the film “Kantara Chapter 1.”
Justice M. Nagaprasanna, presiding over the case, questioned the delay in filing objections and emphasized that public figures must understand their responsibilities. The court noted that while Singh’s attitude was not appropriate, it seemed willing to accept his apology.
During the hearing, both parties presented their arguments. Justice Nagaprasanna remarked that public figures should exercise greater caution in their speech, as their words carry significant weight.
This controversy stems from an incident at the International Film Festival of India held in Goa last year, where Singh mimicked a scene inspired by the character “Daiva,” played by Rishab Shetty in the film “Kantara.” His actions faced considerable backlash.
Several religious organizations and local residents deemed Singh’s mimicry disrespectful to the deity Panjurli, as depicted in Kantara. Consequently, multiple complaints were filed against him in Karnataka, accusing him of offending Hindu deities and local beliefs. Following this, police registered a case against Singh, prompting him to file a petition in the Karnataka High Court to dismiss the FIRs.
In light of the growing controversy, Singh publicly apologized on social media.
