Surat, April 18: Testing has commenced on a crucial segment of the Surat Metro, increasing the likelihood of launching a mass rapid transit system in the city. This initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve access to major commercial hubs, including the Surat Diamond Bourse.
The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited has initiated testing on an 8.5-kilometer corridor between Dream City and Althan Tenement.
This testing phase, which will exceed 500 hours, focuses on evaluating train speed, braking systems, and other technical parameters before operational approval.
Officials stated that this service will provide passengers with a fast, safe, and environmentally friendly mode of transportation.
The metro will offer direct connectivity to the Surat Diamond Bourse, benefiting approximately 40,000 to 45,000 artisans and traders commuting daily from areas like Varachha, Katargam, and Sarathana.
Jayanti Savaliya, regional president of the Gujarat Gems and Jewelry Export Promotion Council, noted that this project will help alleviate traffic-related issues.
He emphasized that the metro’s launch will significantly reduce congestion, allowing 45,000 people to easily travel to the Diamond Bourse. The metro, designed to connect the entire city, is expected to be highly efficient.
Residents have also highlighted the potential impact on daily commutes. Local resident Raj Patel remarked that the arrival of the metro in Surat will greatly relieve those reliant on public transport throughout the day. People will be able to reach their destinations on time. As a Surat resident, I am thrilled that after years of waiting, we are finally getting a metro, and every resident of Surat is pleased.
Another resident, Roshan Chimna, expressed pride in the rapid progress of the project, stating, “What could be more gratifying?”
The Surat Metro Rail project includes two corridors, spanning a total of 40.35 kilometers with 38 stations.
Corridor-1, known as the Diamond Corridor, connects Sarathana to Dream City over a distance of 21.6 kilometers, featuring 15 kilometers of elevated track and 6.5 kilometers of underground track, along with 14 elevated and 6 underground stations.
Corridor-2, also referred to as the Textile Corridor, links Bhesan to Saroli over 18.7 kilometers and is entirely elevated, comprising 18 stations. Two depots are being developed at Dream City and Bhesan.
