Tensions Rise Over Nuclear Weapons Debate, Warns Russia

Berlin, May 11: Russia’s Ambassador to Germany, Sergey Nechayev, stated that Russia does not seek war with Germany or NATO. However, discussions surrounding a “nuclear umbrella” could alter Europe’s strategic landscape.

During a panel discussion titled “Peace Through Dialogue” in Berlin, Nechayev highlighted the recent talks about establishing a joint “nuclear shield.” He emphasized that such developments could significantly change the strategic dynamics across Europe. “We do not want war with NATO or Germany,” he reiterated.

According to a report by Russia’s state news agency TASS, the diplomat noted that the ongoing discussions about a “nuclear shield” are becoming increasingly frequent. He warned that if the nuclear threat in Europe escalates, it would create a fundamentally different strategic situation.

Nechayev cautioned that in such a scenario, Russia might need to revisit its nuclear policy. He warned, “If we face military actions, we cannot guarantee anything.”

In an interview with the Berliner Zeitung, he painted a grim picture of public perception in Europe. “Imagine an ordinary person on the street. What message are they receiving from Europe? Russia is an enemy and a threat to existence. A war with Russia is inevitable. Russia must be strategically defeated. Ukraine should be armed to the teeth.”

On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Saturday that Russian troops in Ukraine are fighting against an “aggressive force” fully supported by NATO. He made these remarks during the “Victory Day” ceremony in Moscow, commemorating the 81st anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II.

In his speech, Putin said, “The great valor of the victorious generation inspires today’s soldiers, who are conducting a special military operation. They are facing an aggressive force that is receiving support and weapons from the entire NATO bloc. Nevertheless, our heroes continue to advance.”
