Kabul, February 28: Tensions along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border have intensified, resulting in the deaths of at least 19 individuals and injuries to 26 others in the eastern provinces of Khost and Paktika, according to Afghan government spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat.
Fitrat reported that most of the deceased were women and children. Meanwhile, Taliban spokesperson Beehullah Mujahid claimed that a “specific group” in Pakistan has initiated a mission to destabilize the region amid rising tensions between Kabul and Islamabad.
During a press conference in Kandahar on Friday, Mujahid urged neighboring countries to prevent the creation of “disturbances.” He asserted that the Afghan military had accurately targeted Pakistani military installations.
When asked if regional countries are calling for an end to hostilities, Mujahid emphasized that Afghanistan seeks a peaceful resolution and has engaged in multiple rounds of talks with Pakistan. However, he noted that Islamabad has been unwilling to resolve issues through dialogue.
Mujahid insisted that Pakistan continually attempts to fabricate reasons for conflict, linking its internal issues to Afghanistan. He also mentioned that Pakistani aircraft are still operating within Afghan airspace.
On Thursday night, Pakistan conducted airstrikes in Kabul, Kandahar, and Paktia provinces. Mujahid stated that the Pakistani military bombarded several areas in these regions, resulting in the deaths of 13 Afghan soldiers and injuries to 22 others during the clashes.
Earlier in the day, Fitrat revealed that the Afghan Air Force retaliated with airstrikes on Pakistani military bases in Islamabad, Nowshera, Jamrud, and Abbottabad. He stated that these strikes were a response to the airstrikes conducted by the Pakistani military in Kabul, Kandahar, and Paktia the previous night.
Fitrat wrote on social media platform X that the Afghan Air Force successfully targeted key military sites in Pakistan, including a military camp near Faizabad in Islamabad, an army cantonment in Nowshera, and military colonies in Jamrud and Abbottabad.
The Afghan Defense Ministry reported that Afghan forces launched counterattacks along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, resulting in the deaths of at least 55 Pakistani soldiers and the capture of two bases along with 19 posts. Additionally, eight Afghan soldiers were killed, and 11 others were injured during the operations.
Previously, when Pakistan attacked Afghanistan, numerous civilians, including women and children, were killed. The Afghan Defense Ministry disclosed that a missile strike by the Pakistani military on a refugee camp in Nangarhar province injured 13 Afghan citizens, including women and children.
According to Pakistani media outlet Dawn, on Thursday, Pakistan initiated “Operation Gajab Lil-Haq” in response to Afghan military counteractions in several border areas. The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) targeted military installations in Kabul, Kandahar, and Paktia with airstrikes.
