Hyderabad, May 11: School students in Telangana will take a collective pledge to stay away from tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao met with Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Monday night at the Lok Bhavan and invited him to a student conference scheduled for June 12, coinciding with the reopening of schools.
During this event, the government will facilitate the pledge, urging students to avoid substances and act as responsible citizens. Previously, Governor Shukla suggested that students should be encouraged to take an oath against substance abuse.
In line with the governor’s recommendation, the state government is organizing a large gathering to administer this pledge to students. Chief Minister Rao also informed the governor that on the same day, students will receive kits containing uniforms, textbooks, notebooks, school bags, sports equipment, and other essential items.
The Chief Minister assured the governor that school and college administrations would be directed to ensure continuous monitoring to protect students from substance abuse and other addictions.
The collective pledge ceremony and related activities will be jointly organized by the Department of School Education, the Police Department, and the Anti-Drug Force, Eagle. This initiative emphasizes the collective responsibility of students, teachers, parents, and management in maintaining a safe and drug-free environment in educational institutions.
Earlier, the Chief Minister participated in the inauguration of the Education Week under the 99-day action plan ‘Praja Palana-Pragati System,’ which focuses on prompt governance, welfare service delivery, and development initiatives. He toured the stalls set up at LB Stadium during the event.
Additionally, he laid the foundation stone for the Young India Integrated School, which will be built at a cost of ₹1,011 crores in the QR area. Chief Minister Rao also distributed cash awards to government teachers for outstanding services and to students for academic excellence.
While overseeing the Education Ministry, the Chief Minister announced his mission to strengthen the education sector by implementing the New Education Policy and various initiatives. These include increasing the education budget annually, starting education from nursery to 12th grade in government schools, and providing breakfast to students in all government educational institutions.
He stated that the government has allocated 8 percent of the state budget for education, a figure that will increase each year, eventually reaching 15 percent of the total budget in the coming years. He emphasized the need to strengthen government schools to compete with private institutions.
