Telangana RTC Launches GI on Wheels Buses to Promote Local Art

Hyderabad, February 27: The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has launched the ‘GI (Geographical Indicator) on Wheels’ buses. These buses, adorned with cultural and artistic images inspired by GI-tagged heritage products, were flagged off on Friday from the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) by Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan and Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar.

Six express buses have been introduced, each themed around different GI art forms for six districts. The GI-themed artworks displayed on the buses reflect Telangana’s rich culture, traditional art forms, handloom, and handicraft heritage. This initiative aims to raise awareness about GI products, support artisans, and promote tourism.

Addressing the event, the Governor emphasized that the primary goal of this initiative is to create public awareness about GI-tagged art forms and to widely promote them. She stated that as a young state, Telangana should strengthen its cultural identity. The Governor highlighted that culture is the soul of society and sustainable development is not possible without cultural awareness. She also mentioned that such initiatives will inspire youth towards traditional arts and give recognition to artisans.

The Transport Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting, marketing, and expanding GI products. He noted that these efforts will create livelihood opportunities for rural artisans and improve their economic conditions. He assured full support from TSRTC for implementing and expanding this initiative across the state.

The program features artistic representations of six major GI-tagged handicrafts from Telangana, including Pochampally Ikat, Warangal Dhurrie, Karimnagar Silver Filigree, Narayanpet Sarees, Cherial Scroll Painting, and Nirmal Paintings.

These art forms, representing the skills and craftsmanship of Telangana’s artisans, will now gain broader recognition through public transport, reaching both urban and rural areas. The Minister stated that the aim is to transform public transport into a creative platform for promoting the state’s rich cultural heritage.

TSRTC Vice Chairman and Managing Director Nagi Reddy commented that this initiative reflects Telangana’s cultural diversity and is inspired by the Governor’s vision. He added that showcasing GI art on buses will bring culture closer to the public and encourage artisans.

The designs displayed on the buses were created by students from Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University (JNAFAU). On this occasion, students were awarded cash prizes and mementos.
