Hyderabad, April 28: The Telangana government has decided to press for a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram project. Following legal advice, Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao has instructed officials to draft a letter requesting the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to initiate an immediate inquiry into the project.
According to the Chief Minister’s office, he has directed ministers to seek an appointment with the CBI director if necessary, to formally submit a memorandum for the investigation.
In light of a recent High Court ruling regarding the Kaleshwaram project, Chief Minister Rao and Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy held a high-level review meeting to assess the situation. During this meeting, they consulted with renowned Supreme Court lawyer Abhishek Singhvi to discuss the way forward and develop an action plan concerning the Kaleshwaram issue.
Legal experts informed the Chief Minister that there are no legal barriers preventing the CBI from conducting an investigation, as no related cases are pending in any court. The Supreme Court lawyer clarified that the High Court found no wrongdoing by the government in the report submitted by the Justice P.C. Ghosh Commission. The court also did not comment against the commission’s findings.
During a cabinet meeting on April 23, the state government emphasized the need for an immediate and expedited CBI investigation into the Kaleshwaram project. Uttam Kumar Reddy noted that it has been nine months since the state government wrote to the CBI requesting an investigation.
He reiterated that the High Court did not grant a clean chit to former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) or former Minister T. Harish Rao. The court clarified that the commission formed to investigate irregularities was not illegal. Reddy claimed that the High Court dismissed the main petition filed by KCR and Harish Rao, which sought to declare the commission illegal and annul its report.
He mentioned that due to some technical issues, the High Court stated that no action should be taken against KCR and Harish Rao.
