Chennai, September 2: The Tamil Nadu government has announced the withdrawal of all criminal cases against farmers and teachers who participated in peaceful protests supporting their livelihoods, rights, and other legitimate demands between May 2021 and April 2026.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay made this announcement in the Assembly under Rule 110, describing it as an effort to protect democratic rights and rebuild trust between the government and the public.
This order will cover cases filed against farmers protesting the proposed industrial estate by the Tamil Nadu State Industries Promotion Corporation in Tiruvannamalai district.
Additionally, cases registered during the prolonged movement against the proposed Greenfield airport in Parandur, Kanchipuram district, will also be withdrawn. Residents of Parandur and nearby villages had consistently protested against the airport project, arguing that it would lead to the acquisition of fertile agricultural land, damage water bodies, and destroy traditional sources of income.
During the movement, the previous government had filed cases against several protesters, with some farmers even detained under the Goonda Act, drawing criticism from political parties, civil society organizations, and human rights activists.
The government stated that, on humanitarian and democratic grounds, all cases, regardless of the legal provisions under which they were filed, would be withdrawn. Relevant departments and officials will be instructed to initiate the withdrawal process.
Officials will investigate the cases and complete necessary legal formalities before presenting applications to the appropriate courts.
This decision is expected to provide relief to farmers who have repeatedly appeared before courts and police officials due to the protests. The announcement also applies to teachers who participated in peaceful demonstrations during these five years.
Teachers’ organizations had organized protests regarding issues related to salaries, pensions, job security, regularization of temporary staff, promotions, and working conditions.
The government emphasized that individuals should not face lengthy criminal proceedings for raising legitimate grievances through peaceful and democratic means.
Chief Minister Vijay affirmed that the administration recognizes the right of farmers, teachers, and other sections of society to express their concerns without fear of punitive action.
This move is likely to benefit hundreds of protesters across the state. The government stated that withdrawing cases will strengthen democratic values, reduce unnecessary litigation, and foster more constructive relationships between citizens and the administration.
