Telangana Government Offers 20% Discount on Electric Vehicles for Employees

Hyderabad, March 24: The Telangana government is promoting electric vehicles as an eco-friendly alternative to petrol and diesel vehicles. On Tuesday, the government announced a new initiative that provides state employees with discounts of up to 20% on electric vehicles.

Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar revealed this initiative, calling it a first of its kind in the country. The discount applies to both electric two-wheelers and four-wheelers for state government employees. This initiative was made possible after several rounds of discussions with major electric vehicle manufacturers, including Mahindra Electric, Ola Electric, Gravton Motors, and Ather Energy.

This unique step could save approximately 400,000 rupees per employee for nearly 500,000 government employees across Telangana. It is the first initiative of its kind in India, where a state government has negotiated discounts from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) specifically for its employees purchasing electric vehicles. This initiative goes beyond traditional tax exemptions, providing direct financial benefits to government workers.

Minister Prabhakar emphasized that the state government aims to make electric vehicles more affordable and practical for everyday use, starting with targeted incentives and measures for government employees.

He stated that once government vehicles transition to electric, everyone in Telangana will breathe cleaner air. This governance approach benefits both the public and the planet.

Additionally, the state government has announced a 100% waiver on road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles, including two-wheelers, four-wheelers, taxis, auto-rickshaws, freight vehicles, tractors, and buses, under its public electric vehicle policy set for 2024.

Minister Prabhakar noted that with the existing 100% waiver on road tax and registration fees, along with the additional 20% purchase discount, Telangana is making electric vehicles the most affordable option in the country. By empowering government employees as early adopters, the state is accelerating the shift towards clean transportation in society.
