Patna, March 30: Tejashwi Yadav, leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), accused Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of being forced to resign from his MLC position due to pressure from the BJP. He asserted that this decision was not made independently.
Speaking to reporters, Yadav emphasized that the resignation was a mandate from the BJP, not a choice made by Kumar. He alleged that certain agents within the Janata Dal (United) imposed this decision, confirming their earlier predictions that Kumar would not remain in his role as Chief Minister.
Yadav also criticized the government for misleading the public regarding key promises. He claimed that the increase in electricity bills was a betrayal to citizens, stating that electricity in Bihar was already expensive and would become even more costly. He pointed out that Kumar had promised ₹2 lakh to every woman but only delivered ₹10,000, with the rest supposedly to come after elections—a promise he now claims is being broken.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari joined the criticism, alleging that the BJP has deceived several leaders, including Nitish Kumar.
Earlier, Nitish Kumar had resigned from the Bihar Legislative Council to fulfill constitutional requirements before taking office as a Rajya Sabha member. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16 and received his election certificate on the same day. Kumar is set to take the oath of office on April 10.
According to constitutional provisions, an elected individual must resign from their current legislative position within 14 days to avoid cancellation of their new membership. Following this directive, Kumar submitted his resignation on March 30, which was presented by MLC Sanjay Gandhi.
With this resignation, Kumar’s long association with the Bihar Legislative Council has come to an end. He first became a member in 2006 and served four consecutive terms (2006-2012, 2012-2018, 2018-2024, and beyond). Since assuming the Chief Minister’s role in November 2005, Kumar has maintained his position through the Legislative Council rather than contesting assembly elections.
Although he was elected as an MLA from Harnaut in 1985 and has served in the Lok Sabha, his tenure as Chief Minister has largely focused on the upper house of the state legislature.
