
Birmingham, July 15: The Indian cricket team kicked off the ODI series with a spectacular victory, defeating England by six wickets at Edgbaston. This win halted England’s 12-year unbeaten run at this venue.
England last faced defeat in ODI cricket at Edgbaston against India in 2014. Since then, they had won all their ODI matches played here. However, under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, the Indian team put an end to England’s winning streak on Tuesday.
Batting first, England was bowled out for 258 runs. They started well, with Jacob Bethel and Ben Duckett adding 61 runs for the first wicket. Bethel scored 14 runs before being dismissed, while Duckett made a solid contribution of 43 runs off 45 balls. Captain Harry Brook had a disappointing outing, scoring just one run, and Jos Buttler fell for five runs, becoming a victim of Prasidh Krishna.
Sam Curran was sent back to the pavilion without scoring, and Will Jacks contributed 20 runs. After losing five wickets for just 80 runs, England’s innings was stabilized by Joe Root and Liam Dawson. The duo formed a remarkable partnership for the sixth wicket, scoring 121 runs off 134 balls. Root remained unbeaten on 76 runs, while Dawson scored 68 runs off 83 balls. For India, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Barar took two wickets each, while Axar Patel claimed four wickets for 62 runs.
Chasing a target of 259 runs, India achieved it in 45.2 overs, losing four wickets in the process. Rohit Sharma was dismissed for just 11 runs, and Virat Kohli managed only five runs. Shubman Gill scored 80 runs off 75 balls before retiring hurt. Shreyas Iyer was run out after scoring 35 runs. Washington Sundar and Axar Patel remained unbeaten, scoring 52 and 57 runs, respectively.
