New Delhi, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian women‘s cricket team has firmly declined to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Nakvi following their victory in the 2026 tournament. This decision echoes that of the men’s team, which similarly refused to accept the trophy from Nakvi after their win in 2025. The ongoing controversy surrounding Nakvi raises questions about how long it will persist.
Mohsin Nakvi became the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on April 3, 2025. His term, which lasts for two years, can only be extended by consensus. According to the rules, he will remain in office until April 3, 2027. The Asia Cup is held every two years, with the next men’s tournament scheduled for June 2027. This timeline suggests that Nakvi will no longer hold the ACC presidency during the next Asia Cup, potentially resolving the trophy dispute.
Before Nakvi, the role of ACC president was held by Jay Shah from 2021 to 2025, who was re-elected unanimously. Given Nakvi’s controversial behavior, the likelihood of his re-election appears slim. Speculation indicates that the next ACC president may come from the Afghanistan Cricket Board, whose term extends to mid-2029. Reports suggest that once Nakvi steps down, the Indian team may finally receive both of their Asia Cup trophies.
After winning the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup, the Indian team did not participate in the closing ceremony. BCCI Secretary Devjeet Saikia and Vice President Rajeev Shukla were seen meeting with players following their championship win. Saikia mentioned that the relationship between India and Nakvi had deteriorated significantly since an incident in Pahalgam in April. He emphasized that the team cannot accept a trophy from someone perceived as acting against India’s interests. He also noted that efforts by the BCCI to resolve the trophy dispute had been unsuccessful.
