Birmingham, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : Pakistan’s cricket team has been dealt a severe blow following their recent defeat to England at Edgbaston. The team was penalized for maintaining a slow over-rate during the third Test, resulting in a significant loss of points in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that Pakistan would face a 50% fine on their match fee due to falling short of the required overs. During the match, which Pakistan lost by eight wickets, they were 11 overs behind the target despite allowances for time lost. The on-field umpires, including Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, along with third umpire Allahuddeen Palekar and fourth umpire Russell Warren, deemed the team guilty of the infraction. Match referee Ranjan Madugalle imposed the penalty on captain Babar Azam’s side following their 0-3 series defeat.
This penalty has had a dire impact on Pakistan’s standings. After the loss in Birmingham, their win percentage in the WTC dropped to 14.81%, placing them at the bottom of the table. With the deduction of 11 points, their win percentage now stands at a mere 4.63%. Currently, the team has accumulated only five points from nine matches, having won two and lost seven. The slow over-rate has cost them 19 of the 24 points they had earned.
This isn’t the first time Pakistan has faced penalties this year. In May, they lost eight points due to a similar slow over-rate issue during a Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka. Meanwhile, Australia continues to lead the WTC standings with 96 points and an impressive win percentage of 80%. South Africa holds second place with 36 points and a 75% win rate, followed closely by New Zealand and Bangladesh, with win percentages of 72.22% and 55.56%, respectively.
