Shubman Gill Confident in Teams Ability to Chase High Targets

Birmingham, July 15: After leading India to a 6-wicket victory in the first ODI against England, captain Shubman Gill expressed strong confidence in his batting unit. He stated that even if the target had been set at 300-320 runs, he believed the team could have successfully chased it down.

England batted first at Edgbaston, scoring 258 runs in 47.5 overs. In response, India clinched the match in just 45.2 overs, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Post-match, Gill remarked, “When your middle and lower order finish the game, it boosts your confidence as a captain. It reflects our team combination. Our bowling attack is relatively young, while our batting unit is more experienced. Therefore, we would have been confident even with a target of 300-320 runs.”

He added, “Our bowling during the middle overs was quite effective. We maintained the right line and length. England did score some runs in the latter part of the powerplay and put us under pressure, but our ability to bounce back was crucial. We will continue to experiment with different team combinations to find the best balance in both batting and bowling. The conditions here were similar to South Africa. The ball was bouncing, and scoring runs early on was challenging. However, the pitch improved later, becoming more favorable for batting.”

On the other hand, England’s captain Harry Brook acknowledged the team’s struggles, saying, “Losing 5 wickets for under 20 runs in the middle overs is far from ideal. Nonetheless, the players fought hard and tried to bring us back into the game with their bowling. Everyone put in a commendable effort. Losing 5 wickets for just 20 runs is never a good situation. I wish we could have performed a bit better.”

He further explained, “We managed to set a score of 258 thanks to a crucial partnership between Joe Root and Liam Dawson. We felt the pitch had changed and had slowed down. At the break, we believed that if the pitch remained the same, this score would be enough to defend. We will select our team based on pitch conditions. On another day, we could score 300-320 runs, and then our spinners could make the match exciting.”
