New Delhi, May 19: The private taxi drivers’ strike in Delhi-NCR has escalated significantly. Drivers claim that taxi fares have not increased in the past 15 years, despite rising CNG prices and inflation. In response to this issue, a strike has been announced for May 21, 22, and 23.
Anuj Kumar Rathore, the Vice President of the Driver Power Union, known as ‘Anna’, accused the government of ignoring the problems faced by taxi drivers.
He stated that drivers have been in continuous discussions with the government for years, yet no concrete decisions have been made regarding their demands.
Rathore emphasized, “The guidelines and fares set under the Delhi NCR City Taxi Scheme have not seen any increase in 15 years. We are left with no choice but to announce a strike on May 21, 22, and 23.”
He mentioned that taxi drivers across Delhi-NCR are participating in this strike. The union’s primary demand is an increase in the fares that have remained unchanged for 15 years, allowing drivers to manage their expenses amid rising inflation.
Rathore also noted that the matter had reached the High Court, which issued an order, yet fares remain stagnant. He remarked, “The government introduced the taxi scheme in 2015, and now it is 2026. CNG prices are rising every few days, and inflation continues to climb, but taxi fares are still the same.”
He added that drivers associated with all taxi platforms, including Ola, Uber, and Rapido, support this strike, as they are all troubled by escalating costs.
Rathore appealed to the government, saying, “Please consider raising our fares; this is our only demand.” He also called on all unions in Delhi to join this movement.
