Tanvi Sharma and M. Tarun Enter Main Draw of India Open 2026

New Delhi: Promising talents Tanvi Sharma, the World Junior Championship silver medallist, along with women’s doubles national champions Ashwini Bhat, Shikha Gautam, and M. Tarun Manepalli have secured their places in the main draw of the BWF India Open 2026.

Key Withdrawals and Impact on Draw

World champion and men’s singles world number one Shi Yuqi of China withdrew from the tournament following his retirement in the Malaysia Open 2026 final against Kunlavut Vitidsarn. His compatriot, Weng Hong Yang, also pulled out. In the women’s singles category, third seed and reigning world champion Akane Yamaguchi from Japan has withdrawn after retiring during her quarter-final match against PV Sindhu at the Malaysia Open. This opened the door for Tanvi Sharma to make her India Open debut.

Exciting Matches Ahead

Tanvi Sharma will face China’s second seed Wang Zhiyi in the opening round. A win here could set up a high-profile encounter with two-time Olympic medallist and compatriot PV Sindhu in the second round. Meanwhile, Tarun’s promotion from the reserve category has created an all-India clash in the men’s singles first round. Tarun will compete against former world champion Kidambi Srikanth, while fellow Indians Lakshya Sen and Ayush Shetty will battle each other.

In the women’s doubles, Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam will take on France’s Margot Lambert and Camilla Pognante in the first round.

Tournament Outlook and Venue

Former world champion PV Sindhu and men’s doubles pair Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy have expressed excitement about performing on home soil. The Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2026, held at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in a large multi-purpose hall, runs from January 13 to 18. The tournament holds special significance this year as the BWF World Badminton Championships will also be hosted at the same venue in August.
