Bhubaneswar, March 24: In a remarkable display of athleticism, Baranika Elangovan, a 29-year-old pole vaulter from Tamil Nadu, set a new national record during the first day of the National Indoor Athletics Championship. The event took place at the Indoor Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday, where Baranika cleared a height of 4.22 meters in the women’s pole vault, surpassing the previous record of 4.21 meters set by Roji Meena Paulraj in 2022 in Bengaluru.
Baranika attempted to push the bar higher to 4.25 meters but was unable to clear that height. The men’s long jump also featured an exciting competition, with Praveen Chithravell from Tamil Nadu and Sarun Payasingh from Odisha battling for the gold medal. Sarun, 25, won the event with a jump of 7.80 meters, marking his best performance to date.
Although Sarun did not achieve any distance on his first attempt, he secured the gold with his second jump of 7.80 meters. His subsequent attempts did not yield any further improvements, with his fifth jump measuring 7.69 meters and his final jump at 7.79 meters. His previous best was 7.78 meters, recorded at the recent Indian Open Jumps competition in Bengaluru.
The spotlight in the men’s long jump also shone on Praveen Chithravell, a national record holder in triple jump. He participated in this event to gain valuable experience in indoor competitions. Praveen’s jumps included an initial leap of 7.32 meters, followed by 7.78 meters and 7.55 meters in his subsequent attempts.
Praveen’s primary goal is the 29th National Senior Athletics Federation Championship, scheduled to take place in Ranchi from May 22 to 25. This championship is particularly significant as it serves as a qualifying event for the Commonwealth Games, set to be held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2.
