New Delhi, August 19: Tania Sachdev is a prominent name in the world of Indian chess. She is not only an accomplished chess player but also a successful model and presenter. This dual talent has earned her the titles of “Beauty with Brains” and the “Glamour Girl” of Indian chess.

Born on August 20, 1986, in Delhi, Tania has been familiar with chess since the age of six. It was during this time that she began learning the intricacies of this intellectual game, initially under the guidance of KC Joshi.

At just eight years old, Tania proved her mettle by winning her first international title, signaling the start of a promising journey in chess. She secured a bronze medal in the Under-12 division at the World Youth Chess Championship. In 2002, she won the Asian Junior Girls Championship, becoming the eighth Indian to earn the title of Women’s Grandmaster in 2005.

Tania’s accolades continued as she clinched the National Women’s Premier Chess Championship in both 2006 and 2007. In 2007, she also won the Women’s Asian Chess Championship. In 2015, she was awarded the Best Female Player at the Reykjavik Open, and that same year, she earned a silver medal at the Asian Continental Women’s Rapid Chess Championship. Tania has been a Commonwealth Women’s Chess Champion in 2016, 2018, and 2019.

In September 2024, she was part of the Indian team that won the country’s first gold medal in chess at the Olympics. Tania has achieved the International Masters (IM) title in 2008 and the Women’s Grandmaster (WGM) title in 2005.

Although Tania is still active in the chess community, she now participates in fewer competitions. She has become a well-known chess commentator and presenter on the global stage. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to chess and for bringing international prestige to the sport in India, Tania was honored with the Arjuna Award in 2009.
