Changwon, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : Indian shooter Mona Agarwal achieved a remarkable feat on September 10, 2026, at the World Shooting Para Sport Championship held in Changwon. She won a silver medal in the women’s 10-meter air rifle SH1 event, securing a quota for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympics. This victory follows her bronze medal win at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
Adding to India’s success, two-time Paralympic champion Avani Lekhara clinched the bronze medal in the same event. The gold medal was awarded to Serbia’s Kristina Trifunovic, who scored 250.2 points. Agarwal closely followed with a score of 250.0, while Lekhara finished with 229.4 points.
This silver medal marks Agarwal’s first at the World Championships, although she previously won silver at a World Cup event in the same location last year. Lekhara, a seasoned competitor with multiple Paralympic medals, secured her first World Championship titles in both the R2 and R8 events after returning to competition following a four-year hiatus.
Agarwal and Lekhara are both familiar with the Changwon range, having participated in several World Cups there. Lekhara notably won gold in 2022. The ongoing 2026 WPS World Championship features 324 shooters from 53 countries, competing for 24 quota spots for the LA28 Paralympics, divided into 13 for men and 11 for women. The top two ranked athletes in each event who have not already qualified will earn slots for their nations.
The shooting para sport program for LA28 includes 13 medal events: three for men, three for women, and seven open events. In total, 150 quota places will be available, with 75 for men, 60 for women, and 15 gender-free athletes.
