New York, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : German tennis star Alexander Zverev has advanced to the semifinals of the 2026 US Open after a decisive victory over Botic van de Zandschulp. Following his win, Zverev shared that he stayed up late to watch Ben Shelton’s stunning upset of two-time US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz.
“I watched the Shelton-Alcaraz match until 3:30 AM. I didn’t go to sleep. I was awake for a long time,” Zverev revealed. Shelton triumphed over Alcaraz with a score of 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-7), delivering a memorable performance in front of the home crowd. This victory set up an all-American semifinal against Frances Tiafoe.
Zverev praised Shelton, saying, “Ben deserves credit. He played an incredible match. Now there will be a fun semifinal between two Americans.” Shelton will face Tiafoe in the first semifinal, while Zverev will compete against Karen Khachanov for a spot in the final.
Zverev reached the semifinals by defeating van de Zandschulp 6-2, 7-5, 6-1. He displayed strong play under pressure, saving a break point at 2-3 in the second set after a grueling 33-shot rally, and capitalized on a forehand error from the Dutch player to secure the set at 5-4.
This marks Zverev’s third appearance in the US Open semifinals. The 29-year-old has had an impressive season, having won his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros earlier this year. He has also established himself as the player with the most match wins on the ATP Tour in 2026, boasting 51 victories. His 23 Grand Slam match wins this season have surpassed Boris Becker’s previous German record of 22 set in 1989.
