Chennai, 30 December. Ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Stalin government has decided to evaluate the impact of its development initiatives during its tenure. The government will conduct a large-scale survey covering approximately 1.91 crore households across the state to understand the effects of various welfare schemes.

The survey will begin in the new year and continue for 12 days. Its aim is to assess the reach and impact of different government programmes among the public.

A total of 55,706 members associated with self-help groups will carry out the survey, collecting data from both urban and rural areas. This initiative is being coordinated by the public department, with the expectation that it will provide insights into how welfare schemes are reaching beneficiaries at the grassroots level.

According to an official order issued by Secretary Rita Harish Thakkar, the survey will use the beneficiary database developed by the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency to evaluate the delivery and impact of welfare programmes.

The collected data will later be analysed to identify gaps in service delivery and to improve policy implementation.

A high-level monitoring committee has been formed to oversee this process. The committee includes senior officials such as the Additional Chief Secretaries of Rural Development and Revenue Departments and the Principal Secretary of the Information Technology Department.

Official figures show that Tamil Nadu has a total of 2.26 crore ration cards, with 89.03 lakh in urban areas and 1.37 crore in rural areas. Out of these, 1.57 crore families currently benefit from one or more government schemes.

The government has allocated a budget of Rs 43.52 crore for this survey.

Surveyors will be provided with identification cards and will collect data using both physical forms and a specially developed mobile application by the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency.

Officials stated that the results will help the government assess ground-level outcomes, enhance welfare delivery, and strengthen the impact of social protection programmes before making future policy decisions.
