T20 World Cup: What Happens if Rain Cancels South Africa vs. New Zealand Match?

New Delhi, March 3: The first semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2026 is set to take place on Wednesday between South Africa and New Zealand at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This match will determine the first team to reach the finals.

South Africa enters the knockout match with strong momentum. The Proteas remain undefeated in the tournament, having defeated Canada, Afghanistan, New Zealand, and the UAE to secure their spot in the Super 8. They achieved victories against India, the West Indies, and Zimbabwe, showcasing their strength. Their win over India in the second phase has positioned them as strong contenders for the title.

On the other hand, New Zealand has had a mixed journey. After securing wins against Afghanistan and the UAE, they faced defeat against South Africa. They concluded their group stage campaign with an 8-wicket victory over Canada.

New Zealand’s first match in the Super 8 was interrupted by rain, resulting in a cancellation. They later defeated Sri Lanka but suffered a 4-wicket loss in their final Super 8 match.

While there was no provision for a reserve day during the group stage and Super 8, the ICC has allocated extra time for the semi-finals and finals. Match officials have an additional 90 minutes on the scheduled day to complete the match.

If rain interrupts play on any day, there will be no ball-out or coin toss. Instead, the teams’ progress will be determined based on the Super 8 standings.

Should the first semi-final between South Africa and New Zealand be canceled due to rain on March 4, the match will resume on the reserve day, March 5, from where it left off. If the match cannot be completed on the reserve day either, the team ranked higher in the Super 8 will advance.

South Africa has secured 6 points by winning all three of their Super 8 matches, boasting a net run rate of +2.259. In contrast, New Zealand has played three matches in the Super 8, winning one, losing one, and having one match canceled, which gives them 3 points and a net run rate of +1.390. Thus, if rain prevents the match from being completed on the reserve day, South Africa will secure a spot in the finals.
