Suspect in Child Murder Case Commits Suicide in Ranchi Police Custody

Ranchi, March 5: A suspect in a child murder case allegedly committed suicide in police custody at the Namkum police station in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. The deceased has been identified as Jagay Munda, 45, from Khunti district. He was arrested on charges of kidnapping and murdering a 12-year-old boy.

According to police officials, Munda was taken into custody on March 4, and the procedure to send him to judicial custody was scheduled for Thursday. After his arrest, he was placed in a cell at the Namkum police station. Late at night, he reportedly used a sheet provided to him to hang himself. The incident caused a stir in the police station upon discovery on Thursday morning.

In response to the situation, the station officer and several senior officials arrived to assess the circumstances. Ranchi Rural Superintendent of Police Praveen Pushkar stated that the body was removed from the cell in the presence of a magistrate and sent to RIMS for an autopsy. He added that the autopsy would also be conducted under the magistrate’s supervision, with the entire process being recorded on video.

Police reports indicate that Jagay Munda was accused of kidnapping and murdering the 12-year-old son of a woman from the Namkum area. Investigations revealed that he lured the child away and later killed him in the Ramgarh region, subsequently burying the body. Following the revelation of the case, police apprehended Munda.

Preliminary investigations have also suggested that the incident may have stemmed from a personal dispute. It is reported that Munda had a relationship with a woman, who later became involved with another man. This dispute allegedly led him to target the woman’s son. A First Information Report (FIR) was filed at the Namkum police station under charges of kidnapping and murder.

Following the suspect’s death in custody, concerns have been raised regarding security measures and monitoring systems. A magistrate inquiry is underway, and the police department is reviewing whether there was any negligence in the custody monitoring. Officials have stated that further actions will be determined based on the investigation report.
