Mumbai, March 20: Director Sujoy Ghosh has received significant relief from the Supreme Court. The court has decided to dismiss the ongoing proceedings related to the copyright infringement case concerning the film ‘Kahaani-2,’ released in 2016.
Ghosh faced allegations of stealing the storyline for ‘Kahaani-2.’ Initially, the case was heard in the Jharkhand High Court. However, challenging the decision, Ghosh approached the Supreme Court. In July 2025, the Supreme Court had already granted him relief by exempting him from appearing in Jharkhand Court and issued a notice seeking a response.
The copyright infringement case related to ‘Kahaani-2’ dates back to 2018. Writer Umesh Mehta accused Ghosh of using his story without permission. Mehta claimed he had narrated the story titled ‘Sabak’ to the director in 2015.
In this case, the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Hazaribagh issued a summons against Sujoy Ghosh, prompting him to seek relief from the Jharkhand High Court. However, the High Court dismissed his plea. Ghosh then appealed to the Supreme Court against the High Court’s decision, also seeking to quash the proceedings in the Jharkhand High Court. The court had previously stated that, at first glance, the case appeared to involve copyright infringement. Consequently, Ghosh turned to the Supreme Court for relief.
Now, the Supreme Court has decided to dismiss the proceedings against the director.
It is noteworthy that ‘Kahaani-2’ was a box office success. The film had a budget of approximately ₹25 crores and grossed ₹45 crores worldwide. Vidya Balan received widespread acclaim for her performance as a mother who single-handedly unravels the mystery of her daughter’s kidnapping. The first part of ‘Kahaani’ was also well-received, with Balan carrying the film on her shoulders.
