New Delhi, August 7: The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition filed by six NEET-UG candidates who alleged discrepancies in their OMR sheets. They claimed that the answers they filled did not match the OMR sheets uploaded by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
During the hearing, the petitioners’ lawyer stated that the six students had participated in a re-conducted NEET exam and their complaint is distinct from other cases.
The lawyer requested the court to provide copies of the original OMR sheets for verification of their scores, emphasizing that the counseling process is already underway.
In response, the Supreme Court noted that numerous similar complaints related to NEET and NTA are pending. The court is currently considering issues related to institutional reforms within the NTA. However, the Supreme Court denied relief to the petitioners, advising them to approach the Delhi High Court and subsequently dismissed the petition.
Earlier, on August 4, following the NEET-UG paper leak controversy, the central government submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court detailing significant measures taken to ensure the examination system’s security and transparency. Under a new law implemented in 2026, severe penalties have been introduced for offenses such as paper leaks and cheating.
The affidavit stated that individuals involved in such malpractices could face up to ten years in prison and fines of up to 5 crore rupees. The government’s aim is to completely eliminate such incidents in the future.
To improve the system, the government has also formed a high-level task force led by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani. This committee will review the current examination system’s flaws and provide recommendations to enhance its security. The central government informed the Supreme Court that this task force will submit its report within three months, which will guide future significant reforms.
