Dog Attack on Toddler Sparks Urgent Action in Shimla

A dog attack on a toddler in Shimla prompts a major sterilization and vaccination campaign starting October 3.

Shimla, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic incident in Shimla has brought the issue of stray dogs to the forefront once again. In the Shankhli area, a 20-month-old girl was severely injured in a dog attack, requiring 20 stitches. This alarming event has reignited concerns over the approximately 3,000 stray dogs in the city.

In response, the Shimla Municipal Corporation is taking action. Mayor Surendra Chauhan announced that a large-scale sterilization and vaccination campaign will commence on October 3. To support this initiative, he has approved ₹18 lakh for the expansion of the Tutikandi Dog Shelter. Additionally, the city plans to offer rewards of ₹200 to ₹300 for capturing stray dogs and impose fines for feeding them in designated areas.

Speaking to reporters, Mayor Chauhan emphasized the need for stricter regulations regarding stray dogs. He noted that previous efforts to manage the situation were met with misinformation, including false claims that dogs were being killed. After investigation, they found no such actions were taking place. Now, new rules are being formulated to better control the stray dog population.

Chauhan also addressed dog lovers, urging them to consider public safety. He stated, “If we pick up a dog, we should return it to the same location after three to four days. However, some dog lovers oppose this practice. We want to remind them that human lives are more important, and we must take firm steps.”

The mayor highlighted the growing concerns over dog bites and has instructed officials to ensure public safety. He also warned dog owners that they could face penalties if their pets cause harm to others.

The situation in Shimla reflects a pressing need for effective management of the stray dog population to ensure community safety.
