Sunetra Pawar Likely to Become Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister

Mumbai: Following the demise of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, his wife Sunetra Pawar is expected to be entrusted with the responsibility of filling his position in the Maharashtra government. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has called an important meeting around 2 pm today, where Sunetra Pawar is likely to be elected as the new leader of the legislative party.

On Saturday morning, there was visible activity outside Ajit Pawar’s Devagiri bungalow, with party workers gathering at his residence. Rupali Patel, a party worker, expressed, “Ajit Dada cared for us like a father. It is still hard to believe that he is no longer with us. Coping with his sudden departure is very difficult.”

She added that working as an ordinary party worker in politics is challenging, but Ajit Dada gave them opportunities. Sunetra Pawar managed the party affairs from behind the scenes.

Rupali Patel further said, “Our grief is profound, but Sunetra Pawar’s sorrow cannot be put into words. We requested her to carry forward Ajit Dada’s vision, and she accepted our appeal. Today, she will take oath as the Deputy Chief Minister.”

According to information, Sunetra Pawar will be sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister this evening at 5 pm. She will become the first woman to hold this position in the state.

Meanwhile, this decision may also put an end to speculations about the merger of the two NCP factions led by Sharad Pawar. Discussions about the unification of the two groups have been ongoing for several days. Recently, the NCP-Sena faction claimed that talks had been finalised and only the announcement remained.

On Friday, Eknath Khadse stated that negotiations had been underway for three to four months and that the merger was almost certain. “There was a plan to announce the merger,” he said.

Former state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh mentioned that Ajit Pawar wanted the merger to happen. Jayant Patil also attended meetings, emphasizing that both factions need to come together as per Ajit Dada’s wish. However, the NCP has called a meeting today to elect Sunetra Pawar as the new leader of the legislative party while remaining with the NDA.
