Lucknow, June 5: On World Environment Day, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the ‘Bio Age’ event in Lucknow, emphasizing the interconnection between national security, self-reliance, and environmental protection. He stated that just as indigenous weapons contributed to the success of ‘Operation Sindoor,’ biofuels, biomaterials, and bio-economy will make India self-reliant in energy and economic sectors.
Singh highlighted that biofuels and bioplastics derived from sugarcane and agricultural resources will not only protect the environment but also serve as new pillars for the country’s economic strength and strategic security. He asserted that the dream of a self-reliant India extends beyond defense to encompass energy, fuel, technology, and environmental conservation.
Referencing ‘Operation Sindoor,’ Singh noted the precise targeting of terrorist structures in Pakistan following a cowardly attack in Pahalgam. He attributed this success to the high morale and indigenous defense capabilities of the Indian armed forces. He stated, “We achieved this because we had indigenous weapons and were not dependent on other countries. We must acquire the same capability in energy, fuel, and technology.”
The Defense Minister remarked that environmental protection is not merely a matter of cleanliness but is directly linked to national strength and security. A clean and healthy environment boosts the morale of soldiers and plays a crucial role in nation-building. He emphasized that when a country generates energy from its fields, crops, and biological resources, it becomes more resilient to external pressures. He called for diversifying energy sources, increasing domestic production, and developing supply chains based on indigenous resources.
Currently, India blends up to 20% ethanol in petrol, primarily derived from sugarcane and agricultural products. This ethanol blend has proven to be a strong shield for India amid crises in West Asia and significant spikes in global oil prices.
“This 20% ethanol acted as a buffer, protecting the economy from major shocks. Biofuels are not just a means of environmental protection; they are also a vital tool for national security and economic stability,” Singh stated.
He also discussed the potential of the bioplastic industry in Uttar Pradesh, noting that the state government’s bioplastic industry policy is giving new momentum to this sector. Singh specifically mentioned PLA (poly-lactic acid) based bioplastics made from sugarcane, which are fully biodegradable and could serve as an environmentally friendly alternative. He remarked that traditional plastics have become a “necessary evil,” but bioplastics can mitigate this issue in an eco-friendly manner. He praised Balrampur Chini Mills for their initiative in producing PLA from sugarcane.
Singh pointed out that recent crises in the Middle East have disrupted global supply chains, leading to shortages of raw materials for many plastic industries. However, if India increases bioplastic production from sugarcane and agricultural resources, it will reduce foreign dependency and strengthen the country’s economic security.
He concluded by stating that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh is promoting bio-economy. This initiative is enhancing the income of sugarcane farmers while expanding agriculture-based industries. He noted that the state is moving from the ‘Bahubali Era’ to the ‘Bio Age,’ where development, environmental protection, and self-reliance progress hand in hand.
