Shekhawati, March 7: A sick female leopard caused panic among villagers in the Neemkathana area of Rajasthan’s Sikar district.
On Friday afternoon, around 3 PM, the leopard entered the backyard of Puranmal Sharma’s house in Durga Wali Dhani, Mahawa village. Villagers quickly alerted the forest department, and a rescue team arrived at the scene. However, the leopard hid in thorny bushes, complicating the rescue efforts. As night fell, the operation could not be completed.
By Saturday morning, a crowd of villagers had gathered at the site. The leopard wandered through the fields, roaring loudly and appearing disoriented. It was seen stumbling several times before retreating into the thorny underbrush. Dr. Ashok Kumar, a senior veterinary officer from the rescue team based in Jaipur, arrived to assist. The team set up a trap in the field to prepare for the rescue.
As the team attempted to capture the leopard, it suddenly lunged at the forest personnel, forcing them to flee for safety. Initially, the team tried to rescue the animal without sedation, but the leopard remained aggressive. Dr. Kumar administered a light dose of tranquilizer, allowing them to gain control. After 22 hours of effort, the leopard was successfully captured.
Dr. Kumar reported that the leopard is approximately two and a half years old and exhibited signs of neurological issues, which contributed to its illness and instability. This condition likely caused its aggressive behavior and difficulty in movement. The leopard will be sent to the rescue center at Nahargarh Biological Park in Jaipur for treatment. Once it recovers, it will be released back into the wild.
The successful rescue has brought relief to the local community. The swift action by the forest department team has been praised for reducing human-wildlife conflict.
