Student Orders High-End GPU, Receives Detergent Instead in Shocking Amazon Mix-Up

Mumbai, March 24: A bizarre online shopping incident in India has caught widespread attention after a student ordered a high-end NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090, only to receive an unexpected package. Instead of the graphics card valued at ₹2,99,995, the box contained a 1kg packet of laundry detergent.

The incident was shared on Reddit by user void_SW, who was assisting his friend Harsh Raj, a student at IIT BHU. The order was placed on March 10 for a GIGABYTE RTX 5090 WINDFORCE OC 32G through Amazon India, under the Fulfilled by Amazon program. The delivery took place on March 14, and initially, there were no visible issues with the outer packaging.

However, the situation changed dramatically upon opening the box. Instead of the expected GPU, they found only bubble wrap and a packet of Ghadi detergent. The packaging raised suspicions, showing signs of tampering. Notably, the shipment’s weight was listed as 1.56 kg, which is inconsistent with the expected weight of a large GPU box.

They provided Amazon with uncut, high-resolution unboxing footage, complete with timestamps, while filing their complaint. Yet, after about a week, their claim was denied.

Adding to the concern, similar complaints have emerged in reviews associated with the same seller. Other buyers have reported receiving unrelated items instead of what they ordered. The exact cause of these mix-ups remains unclear, but the pattern is alarming.

A Similar Experience

I encountered a similar issue in January when I ordered a laptop from Amazon India. Although the product was the correct model, the packaging raised immediate concerns. The brand seal was broken, and the usual tamper-proof “Package ID” was not attached to the box but shown separately by the delivery personnel.

He assured me this was standard practice and encouraged me to check the laptop, but it wouldn’t power on. Since it was a cash-on-delivery order, I opted to cancel it immediately. Incidents like these, along with recent reports, serve as a reminder to exercise caution when purchasing expensive items online, or to consider offline options first.
