New Delhi, March 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Dissanayake engaged in a significant phone conversation on Tuesday, addressing both regional and global issues. The leaders emphasized the necessity of ensuring the security of international shipping lanes.
During their discussion, they focused on the evolving situation in West Asia, particularly the obstacles affecting global energy security. Both leaders reiterated the importance of keeping shipping lanes open and secure for the benefit of the entire world.
Prime Minister Modi and President Dissanayake reviewed the progress of various initiatives aimed at strengthening India-Sri Lanka energy cooperation and enhancing regional security. Modi reaffirmed India’s strong commitment to collaborating on shared challenges, in line with India’s ‘Neighborhood First’ policy and ‘Ocean’ vision.
Earlier on the same day, U.S. President Donald Trump also spoke with Prime Minister Modi over the phone. Modi shared on the social media platform ‘X’ that President Trump called to exchange useful insights regarding the situation in West Asia. He stated, “India supports efforts to reduce tensions and restore peace as soon as possible. Ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure, and accessible is vital for the entire world. We agreed to stay in touch regarding our efforts towards peace and stability.”
This phone call marks the first conversation between the two leaders since the outbreak of conflict in West Asia. They discussed the current situation in the Middle East, emphasizing the need to maintain safe and open navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil supply that has seen increased tensions due to recent conflicts.
It is noteworthy that the war between the U.S.-Israel and Iran in West Asia has been ongoing for nearly 25 days. Attacks and blockades by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted global oil and gas supplies. India imports over 60% of its crude oil and gas from this region, making the crisis a direct threat to India’s energy security.
