Agartala, March 24: Just hours after the ruling BJP announced its candidates, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) has released its list for the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections.
TMP founder Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma and president Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl jointly announced the candidates on Tuesday night.
TTAADC Chairman Jagdish Debbarma will contest again from the Jirania seat, while Executive Member Purn Chandra Jamatiya will run from the Killa-Bagma seat.
A day earlier, Debbarma made it clear that there would be no alliance with the BJP for the elections scheduled on April 12. He stated that without significant progress on the trilateral agreement made on March 2, 2024, no electoral understanding would be possible.
He emphasized that mere assurances are not enough; implementation on the ground is essential.
Meanwhile, BJP state president Rajiv Bhattacharya announced that his party will contest all 28 seats. He noted that the BJP currently has nine members in the TTAADC, with seven being renominated.
Voting for the 30-member council will take place on April 12, with counting scheduled for April 17. The council consists of 28 elected members and two nominated members.
This election is considered crucial in the state’s politics, focusing on issues like the rights, identity, and future of the tribal community. Notably, TMP has been governing the TTAADC since 2021 and views this election as a decisive battle to maintain its hold.
Additionally, the BJP’s other ally, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), has also announced candidates for nine seats.
This time, a multi-cornered contest is expected in the state, with the BJP, TMP, IPFT, Congress, and left parties all actively campaigning to win over tribal voters.
